Discussion:
FTP Mirrors please provide HTTP access
(too old to reply)

Hi All,

A few of us would like to request that all FTP mirrors start allowing
HTTP access to the same URL. What we are looking for is the path to be
the same. i.e. only the the protocol should change.

For example, we should be able to change:

ftp://ftp4.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/distfiles/dits-2.2.34.tar.gz

into:

http://ftp4.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/distfiles/dits-2.2.34.tar.gz

If you run a FTP mirror, please set this up. If you are worried about
running something big like Apache, perhaps running a smaller HTTP server
like thttpd would work for you.

ftp2.kr already provides HTTP access with same paths of FTP.
We use lighttpd here too. :)

Or what I use on ftp4, lighttpd, which is small and faaaast.

ftp1.fr.freebsd.org provides HTTP access with same paths of FTP .
apache 2.2.x with worker thread mpm is now enough for those who forget that
FTP means FILE Transfer Protocol.

It would be better someone does script a test which gets run against all
official mirror sites.
That could be run periodically to help keeping the web pages uptodate.

it still works?

ftp7.de.freebsd.org does it for about 15 years ...

Back then it was a little CGI program that I wrote in C.
It ran under Apache and produced directory listings
with download links for http, ftp and mail, and other
useful things.

I'm not an admin at that site anymore, and that CGI is
long gone, but http access is still there, of course.

Best regards

I do it very simple, without any script - just with an apache alias
definition:

Alias /pub /ftp/pub/
<Directory /ftp/pub>
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
</Directory>

http://ftp2.br.freebsd.org/ has been alive for a long time, but rooted
at ftp://ftp2.br.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/
Should we change it now or at some specific date?
For consistency it would be nice to have the same root for all mirrors,
so I'd say just change it when you have a few minutes.
